SAM CHILDERS – INTERNATIONAL AWARDEE
(Before VO start with FX of revving Harley Davidson motorcycle) (FX of children playing gently overlapping the VO when part of “thankful voices of young boys and girls” is mentioned)
The revving sound of a Harley Davidson has now been matched in his life by the thankful voices of young boys and girls rescued by him and his organisation from the clutches of a war-criminal and now reside in southern Sudan. Here is where this brave-heart chooses to serve. Here is Sam Childers.
There are few people in the world whose life story inspires feature films. But then, there are few people like Sam Childers.
Famously known as the Machine Gun Preacher, and with the distinction of a film inspired by his life with the same name, Childers grew up in the hills of Pennsylvania in the United States of America.
As is the case with several teenagers, he went astray in his formative years by getting involved with drugs and alcohol which led him further away in the life of crime characterized by gang fights. It was soon after that he joined a biker gang and became a gang member with a lifestyle that matched.
Words of warning from his father haunted him, and it was then that Sam began reordering his steps back to find his way back into society.
He found Jesus Christ in the summer of 1992 when he surrendered himself to the Truth at a revival meeting. A life of restoration began, and Childers in the years following went on his first mission trip to Sudan at the end of 1998.
It was during this trip and many that followed subsequently that Childers was exposed to the heinous and atrocious acts of the diabolical Lord’s Resistance Army, a militia outfit which has been waging war against the government of neighbouring Uganda. The war-lord of this outfit, infamous as Joseph Kony, is the first indictee of the International Criminal Court at the Hague and is accused of kidnapping small boys to serve in his faction as child-soldiers, and the girls as sex-slaves.
Seeing the sufferings of these children, Childers was deeply moved. Not long after his first trip to Sudan, Childers and his wife Lynn founded the Angels of East Africa, the Children’s Village Orphanage in Nimule, South Sudan, where they currently have more than 300 rescued children in their care.
Angels of East Africa is a Children’s village for orphans located in South Sudan. It is dedicated to the rescue, restoration and enablement of children caught in the crossfire of the rebel atrocities in the area.
This organization has been operating for a decade, saving the lives of hundreds of children and renewing hope in a region where it had all but vanished.
Even though the threat of attack is a daily reality, Sam Childers and his team refuse to let the militia faction terrorize the children they have worked so hard to rescue and protect.
Sam has a mission to make a permanent difference in southern Sudan and take active steps to serve the people of the region. Fearlessly he bought 40 hectares of undeveloped land in the middle of the conflict zone.
The team have built a functional compound and rescued more than 800 children, since having first moved in to the country. They currently sustain over 200 children at the orphanage alone and have promised to continue to search for and rescue more until the day that Sudan’s children are free from the terror of rebel conflict.
